Job Description

The Office of Inspector General is the independent oversight body for Chicago’s approximately 650 public, contract and charter schools. The Office of Inspector General is charged with the responsibility of investigating allegations of waste, fraud, financial mismanagement and misconduct in public education within the jurisdiction of the Chicago Board of Education. The OIG’s Performance Analysis Unit conducts data analysis and various forms of research as part of performance reviews that produce recommendations aimed at improving CPS programs and processes.

Job Summary:

As a member of the Performance Analysis Unit of the Office of Inspector General (OIG), the performance analyst fills a central role in executing the mission of the OIG. Under the supervision of the chief performance analyst, the performance analyst will assist in the execution of complex, large-scale performance evaluations. This work involves data analysis and in-depth research of various CPS programs and procedures with the goal of producing constructive findings and robust recommendations to improve district operations and efficiency.

This Job Will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Participate in interviews of a wide variety of subjects -- from school staff and students to CPS executives and outside experts. Prepare focused questions for such interviews, take diligent notes and write accurate summaries of these interviews.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, interpret and discuss data and departmental records related to program performance and efficiency to produce robust findings and recommendations.
  • Perform data analysis using software such as Excel or Access. Create tables, graphs, PowerPoints and other forms of data visualization using Word, Excel or other software.
  • Obtain, read, evaluate, and summarize academic research or relevant information concerning various issues facing CPS.
  • Write concise, logical and analytical reports summarizing complex issues involved in producing robust findings and recommendations.
  • Organize and maintain Performance Analysis Unit files.
    Conduct site visits to schools and other CPS offices to obtain and perform analyses of work records and related documents (e.g., time sheets, activity reports, and financial statements)
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • Master’s degree preferred

Experience Required:

  • Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in roles requiring any combination of the following: excellent writing skills, investigative work, data analysis, data visualization, research of complex topics, file management, survey writing.
  • A master's degree with two (2) years of relevant and professional experience will be considered.
  • Experience with data visualization programs such as Canva, Excel Charts or Tableau.
  • Knowledge of Access, SPSS, R or QGIS is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy while managing multiple assignments.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to define problems, analyze and interpret data, outline valid conclusions and recommend constructive action steps.
  • Strong technical and computer skills, including proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, Google Docs,
  • Google Sheets and PowerPoint. Strong Word formatting skills.
  • Extremely high level of integrity, honesty, credibility, and refined judgment, including the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Keen interpersonal skills; ability to build collaborative relationships with a variety of internal and external constituent groups, and to work as both a collaborative team member and independently.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, organize large amounts of complex information and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis

  • As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
