Project Overview:

The Knoxville Engineering Office is the engineering execution center for Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security, & Environmental business line, providing engineering design development and support to multiple large complex projects. Projects executed out of this office are primarily large government works throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE.

Job Summary:

In this role as a Fire Protection Engineer, you will work on various projects as part of the NS&E engineering execution center team. The projects that will be assigned involve government and commercial work throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE. The successful candidate must have strong organization and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving skills, can-do attitude, and the design to innovate designs.

 

In this role, you will prepare design and procurement documents relating to Fire Protection and support the design and development of fire protection systems and equipment. You will develop calculations, design drawings (P&IDs, plans, layouts), Fire Protection hazard analysis reports, system design descriptions, requisition specifications, review and approve sub-contractors’ submittals, and assist in determining needed changes and with final testing. Your work will lead the implementation of programs and procedures that promote fire safety.

 

This role will be based in Knoxville, TN with period business travel, as required.

Major Responsibilities:

• Executes assignments in Fire Protection Engineering for various projects.
• Participates in the design and development of Fire Protection systems and equipment including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm and mass notification systems in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements.
• Develops deliverables including calculations, design and construction drawings, hazards analysis reports, system design descriptions, and requisition specifications.
• Analyzes life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations and egress analysis.
• Performs on-site fire protection system evaluations and assists with final system testing. Performs building and fire code analyses and interpretations.
• Provides technical guidance in review of engineering analyses and engineering judgments for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops.
• Participates in pre-award meetings, as appropriate. Attends post-award contract meetings, such as post-award kickoff meetings (PAK), preconstruction conferences, informal or formal partnering meetings, schedule acceptance meeting, design review meetings, weekly progress meetings, and Facility Turnover Planning Meetings.
• Visits construction sites to monitor progress and resolve construction issues in a timely manner.
• Assists in identifying the need for a modification to scope, cost and/or schedule based on collaboration with the construction contractor, Supported Command, designer of record, PM and/or other entities.
• Assists with construction quality assurance by performing code required special inspections or required observations.
• Participates in implementing programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements​. Maintains current knowledge of all building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance.
• Supports interpreting, organizing, and coordinating Fire Protection issues with internal and external stakeholders.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering (or related) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional work experience.
• Must be a U.S citizen.
• Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes – including NFPA, UL and FM standards.
• Developing experience and working towards passing the fire protection engineering written examination administered by NCEES to become a registered Fire Protection PE
• Experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design.
