University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site at San Diego, CA in the Social & Behavioral Sciences & Gerontology program. Specifically, the following course(s):
Introduction to Sociology (SOCY 100):
An introduction to the basic concepts, theoretical perspectives, and research methods in sociology. The objective is to apply sociological imagination, perspectives, and research to uncover patterns of social behavior and identify their consequences. Topics include culture, socialization, groups, deviance, stratification, institutions, and social change.
Introduction to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WMST 200):
An interdisciplinary study of the status, roles, and experiences of women in contemporary society. The aim is to recognize the impact of gender in all academic disciplines; analyze political, economic, social, and cultural issues through a feminist lens; and apply knowledge of local and global issues to affect positive change in women's lives. Discussion covers women's experiences across geography and history. Topics include gender and other identities, systems of privilege and inequality, sexuality, and power relations.
Required Education and Experience
Master's degree within the Social Sciences or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Professional experience in Sociology or related field.
Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred.
This position is specifically to teach in San Diego, CA.

The Adjunct Faculty Role at UMGC

Your role as an adjunct faculty member will be to:
Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
