The Kariyawasam Lab at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is seeking a highly motivated graduate student to join our Soybean Pathology team within the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. The successful candidate will play a key role in conducting research projects, which include setting up experiments, performing experimental procedures, and collecting, analyzing data writing manuscripts. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be part of state-of-the-art research involving plant pathology, genetics, molecular biology and genomics, focused on soybean-fungal pathogen interactions. This research ultimately facilitates the breeding of soybean lines genetically resistant to fungal diseases such as frogeye leaf spot and brown spot.

Responsibilities:

1. Setting up experiments by planting soybean lines in the greenhouse.

2. Preparing culture media.

3. Culturing fungi, Preparing fungal inoculate and fungal inoculation of soybean breading lines.

4. Collecting and analyzing data.

5. Participating in development of scientific communications such as posters, PowerPoint presentations, proposals, manuscripts, etc.

6. Extracting fungi from the infected leaves.

7. Extracting fungal DNA and preparing samples for whole genome sequencing.

8. Conducting genome-wide association mapping.

Preferred Qualifications

1. A major or minor in Plant Science, Biological Sciences, Plant Pathology, Bioinformatics or a related discipline at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

2. Basic proficiency in using R.

3. Fundamental knowledge of molecular biology.
